Lav & Kush Needs Your Help!

Lav & Kush has been nominated for the first ever Fashion Takes Action Award.

The winner of the award is selected by YOU! The Voting Deadline is April 16th and voting only takes a second.

Please follow the link at the end of this post to cast your vote and for more information.

Lav & Kush is very excited to be nominated for this award as nominees were selected based on their roles in the sustainable fashion movement and had to meet the following rigorous criteria:

Materials used:
The company must use sustainably manufactured (ie organic cotton, hemp, tencel, ramie etc) materials and may also show how they have repurposed material, or upcycled fabric. It was also taken into consideration if the company implemented the use of eco friendly dyes, trim, notions etc. production, design and special features.

Production:
This category looked at the production stage of the life-cycle, with a focus on labour and human rights, and the use of local or overseas production. Certification schemes and procedures that a company has in place that ensures adherence to international standards was a main consideration as well as if they have been mindful of the carbon footprint associated with manufacturing.

Design:
This category looks at the overall design aesthetic – is it fashionable? Wearable? Seasonless? In addition, this category looks at what design solutions and techniques may have been used such as slow fashion, innovative fabrics etc.

Special Features:
Any extra eco-initiatives taken on by the company such as hang tags, hangers, garment bags, energy efficiency, waste policy etc. was also taken into consideration. Companies were also nominated if they educate their customers on safe and responsible laundering habits, and product disposal. Also, any charitable work, such as donations or volunteerism, was also highlighted in this category.

Meet The Designer!

Lav and Kush was launched in Spring 2008 by designer Angela Saxena. Born in Lanigan, Saskatchewan, Angela started sketching at the young age of seven. Her first claim to designer fame was in the Archie Comic books where her dress designs won a competition and were featured on Veronica and Betty. Angela pursued fashion education for one year in Calgary where she specialized in Creative Fashion Design and later graduated from Kwantlen College with a degree in Fashion Design and Technology. After the completion of her studies, Angela began working as a fashion sales representative and in 2000 she opened her own agency. Although her agency had taken off, she still dreamed of starting her own flirty and sexy clothing line.

Angela wanted to create fashion that made a difference in the world. Her initial goal was to donate a percentage of sales to non-profits, however, she decided to take it one step further and create a clothing line using mostly eco fabrics. After some research into environmentally friendly fabrics, Angela discovered just how beautiful eco clothing can be, and Lav and Kush was born!

The basic concept behind Lav and Kush is to create flirty, feminine clothing in soft buttery sustainable and organic fabrics that flatter most body types while keeping a moderate price point. The line is primarily manufactured in Vancouver and is found in over fifty boutiques across Canada and the North-Western United States.

On top of being an eco-friendly designer, Angela has created a Fashion Share program which links all of Lav and Kush’s events with the various non-profits they support. Consumer feedback is a very important part of Lav and Kush and Angela loves to hear customer’s ideas on anything from clothing to important social and environmental issues.

Angela’s future plans for Lav and Kush are quite impressive. Her dream is to turn Lav and Kush into a successful global brand that is manufactured in factories around the world that help create sustainable communities in third world countries, all the while producing top quality garments from fabrics that are less taxing to the earth.

In the meantime, Angela is creating divisions of Lav and Kush in Loungewear and Children’s Loungewear. Lav and Kush’s Spring 2010 Collection will be available in stores March 2010.

Lav and Kush Presents New Spring Line for 2010

This spring, Lav and Kush brings joy to your wardrobe! Our newest collection proves that eco-friendly clothing really can be flirty, fun and edgy with flowing dresses, sophisticated walking shorts and cozy loungewear that are a popular favourite in over 50 boutiques across North America.

Inspired by springtime joy, the Spring 2010 collection is full of eye-catching colours and prints. Highlights of this season’s fabrics include a buttery soft modal jersey in rich hues of teal and mauve; bright and unique silk cotton voiles; and an edgier linen group that offsets the delicateness of the collection.

Best selling items for Spring 2010 include a sexy black tier dress in modal, a fun printed silk voile dress in wine, and a ruffled-front teal dress in jersey. The flirty and sustainable collection retails between $75 and $198.

Our loungewear line, Lavish, features a number of soft and cozy pieces made of bamboo French terry that are perfect for the beach or a walk in the park. Colours this season include plum, chocolate and fuchsia so you can feel comfortable while looking great.
